Satyrs (the Satyroi) are fertility daimones (spirits) of the wilderness, countryside, and forests. They are close companions of the gods Dionysus, Pan, Rheia, Gaia, Hermes and Hephaistos; and mated with the tribes of Nymphai (Nymphs) in the mountain wilds. Satyrs are depicted as animal-like men (mostly), with erect penises, pointy ears, and pug noses. They are closely related to Panes, which resemble the god Pan, having hooves and goat legs. Their female equivalent is a Satyress. They are usually shown drinking, dancing, playing instruments (such as flutes or the panpipe) and communing with the nymphs.
